Custom Robot Gripper
Custom Robot Gripper
We partnered with an Australian automation company and supplier of industrial robots to design, build, and install a custom pneumatic gripper to augment an automated pick and place application for the food and pharmaceutical industry.
Do you need help with a unique challenge?
Challenge:
The bespoke gripper module solution required adaptation to the specific, complex task requirements, as well as the specifications of an existing off the shelf robot model. The gripper design needed to consider the payload capabilities of the robotic arm (and gripper). It needed to accommodate the lifting of large, heavy, complex trays from the edge of a conveyor system, whilst keeping the entire lifting mass below 10kg.
Outcome:
We employed an iterative process to validate designs in conjunction with the customer.
Following design and prototype manufacture, we assembled and simulated the robotic gripper module to ensure optimal operability.
The final gripper module was successfully fitted on site by our automation customer to complete their project.

Robotic gripper design can represent a complex and sensitive engineering challenge.
While off-the-shelf robots are designed for flexibility to accommodate a range of programmed applications, choice of end–of–arm gripper, or end-of-arm tooling must be specific to the task required to be performed.
Gripper design must fully integrate with the robot arm with consideration to function, precision, speed, and payload capacity.
Engaging Stafford Engineering’s design thinking and custom engineering capability can help customers unlock the full potential of robotic automation.
